Here are a the best first steps to take when faced with a plumbing emergency:

Burst Pipe / Water Leak:

  1. Cut off the water supply to the house. (If the leaking appliance itself or the specific area of your house has its own local shut-off, you just cut that off instead.)
  2. Use towels to block any additional water from seeping from the damaged area.
  3. Deal with any water that has touched a carpeted area (even clean water can create long-term damage if not treated immediately).
  4. Deal with the water within the damaged area.
  5. Call us to come deal with the leak.

Water Heater Leak:

  1. Turn off the water supply to the heater itself. There are two types of valves. The most common is a handle (either red or yellow) directly above the unit, aligned parallel to the pipe it is attached to. Turn it 90 degrees. Or you might see a circular blue handle (in the same shape as an outdoor water-tap), which you can close by turning clock-wise.
  2. Cut off the gas supply to the heater. There’s usually a yellow handle or a simple brass fitting. You close it by giving it a 1/4 turn (usually clock-wise, but not always – it needs to end up at 90-degree angle to the pipe).
  3. Deal with any water that has touched a carpeted area (even clean water can create damage if not treated immediately).
  4. Deal with the water within the damaged area.
  5. Call us to come inspect the heater.
